The First Known Example of Terra-Forming
If you have not read the introductory article, you really should do so before reading
further in this one, as the introductory tome lays foundations which are critical to clarity
and full understanding. Please read “Exploring the Bible – the Beginning”.
Please keep in mind our goal to reduce some of the misunderstanding and open
hostility which exists on both sides (religion vs. science) and between people of various
Look again at the first two verses of the Bible. As you may recall from our introduction,
we will be primarily using the Authorized King James Version (KJV), usually enlightened
by a comparison with Young’s Literal Translation (YLT).
1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. Genesis 1:1-2 (KJV)
1 In the beginning of God’s preparing the heavens and the earth—
2 the earth hath existed waste and void, and darkness is on the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God fluttering on the face of the waters, Genesis 1:1-2 (YLT)
This very clear statement indicates that this Earth and the heavens which surround it
were created by an intelligent being, which we generally refer to as “God”. Technically,
that word is not a name, but rather a description (as the Bible can be called “Book”).
There are actually numerous names which are applied to Him. (For the moment, we will
not go there.)
Of course, for the events described in Genesis 1 to be possible, such a being must be
incredibly more complex and powerful than any human. If you doubt or deny his
existence, please bear with me. You tolerate all sorts of fantastic concepts in the name
of science, and especially of science fiction. If you don’t accept scripture as truth, then
treat it (for now) as science fiction!
As this is written, a number of credible scientific minds are focused on exploration of
Mars, and of potential activities which may one day be conducted there by men /
women from Earth. Included in these concepts are some proposed activities which are
collectively described as “terra-forming”. This theoretical process amounts to deliberate modification of the environment of an entire planet, for the purpose of making it more hospitable to our sort of life forms.
The people who propose Terra-forming of Mars are not ridiculed by the general scientific community – even though the concept is not universally accepted as “wise”, or even as possible. If modern scientists are willing to treat the concept of Terra-forming Mars as a legitimate scientific debate, why is it any less credible to suggest that our planet was intentionally Terra-formed?
If Earth was Terra-Formed, Who did it?
Getting back to our text: “In the beginning, God…” Why does this seem so repugnant
to so many folks? Even if the prevailing theories of leading scientists are correct about
the “How”, is it unreasonable to ask, “Who?”
As previously mentioned, “God” is not a name, but rather a description. It has become, in prevailing Christian circles, the accepted name (nickname?) by which we refer to the entity who is more correctly known as “Yahweh”, or “Jehovah”. Yes, technically, the Jehovah’s Witnesses are correct in their insistence on calling Him by His specific name, rather than by a word which actually amounts to a common noun.
Having acknowledged that “God” is not actually the proper name—because it IS the
term which is most commonly used in the KJV, and because it is more or less
universally recognized in the United States, in this series, we will call Him (Jehovah /
Yahweh) by His prevailing nickname – “God”. You have probably noticed that I even
capitalize the pronouns by which I refer to Him. This should give you a glimpse of MY
attitude toward Him. Those caps are not accidental, typographical errors!
As we continue through Genesis, you will find that chapter 1 is a brief account of the
Terra-forming and populating of the planet. Chapter 2 then develops the topics
previously introduced, in greater detail. Don’t be confused by the seeming duplication.
Chapter 2 does not describe a second creation event, but rather fills in details which
were omitted from the first account.
Just to remind you where we are in the process; in the beginning God created the stuff
from which everything on Earth was made. Before the beginning? Nothing! Scientists
debate whether there was an incredibly small, incredibly dense particle – or whether
material was literally created from nothing – maybe a direct transition of energy to
It is not debated that matter can be converted to energy – and the same theory of
relativity which describes the boundaries of extracting energy from matter says that the
process can go both ways. If it is theoretically possible to make matter from energy –
and if we have learned how to make energy from matter – dare we be so arrogant as to
assume that only we are intelligent enough to ever be able to make matter from energy? Does the Bible answer the debate of what the universe was made from?
As a matter of fact, the great Apostle Paul – formerly known as Saul of Tarsus, a rising young star among the Jewish Pharisees during the first century – would say that scripture does answer that question.
He wrote, in Hebrews 11:3 (KJV); through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
While we are on that topic, notice that Paul – and the 16th – 17th century translators of
his words – clearly understood that the planets are more than just “lights in the sky” –
but that is a topic for another day!
